Hemicyclaspis murchisoni The Gornal Fish can be seen in the Lapworth Museum of Geology at Birmingham University. It's a really bizarre looking jawless fish from the Upper Silurian period that was found in Holloway Quarry, just below Ruiton Mill. The Upper Silurian is a division of the Silurian Period, which is a geological period that occurred from approximately 443.8 to 419.2 million years ago. The Silurian Period is part of the Paleozoic Era, which spans from about 541 to 252 million years ago. Hemicyclaspis murchisoni is an extinct species of jawless fish from approximately 430 million years ago. It belongs to the class Agnatha, which comprises the jawless fishes, including both extinct forms like Hemicyclaspis murchisoni and modern-day lampreys and hagfish. Named after Sir Roderick Impey Murchison (1792-1871), a Scottish geologist and palaeontologist who made significant contributions to the understanding of the Earth's geological history. He is best known for his work on the Silurian system, a geological period he defined in the early 1830s. He served as director-general of the British Geological Survey from 1855 until his death in 1871 Murchison conducted extensive geological surveys, primarily in Wales and the border region between England and Wales, where he studied the rock formations and fossils. Based on his observations, he identified a distinct set of rock layers that contained specific fossil assemblages. In 1839, Murchison, along with his colleague Adam Sedgwick, proposed the name "Silurian" for this period, after the ancient Silures tribe that inhabited the region where these rocks were prominently exposed. He then took them to the top of the Wren's Nest, where he was enthroned by the Bishop of Oxford, to everyone's amusement, as 'King of Siluria'.
